Senior / Principal Scientist Lung Modeling, Complex in vitro Systems (CiS) Laboratory

Genentech is recruiting a Senior or Principal Scientist to lead lung modeling research within our Complex in vitro Systems (CiS) Laboratory, located in South San Francisco, San Mateo County. This full-time role offers the opportunity to drive innovative in vitro approaches that support the development of next-generation therapies for respiratory and related diseases.

The Opportunity

Join Genentech's Complex in vitro Systems Laboratory to advance our understanding of lung biology through sophisticated modeling. As a Senior or Principal Scientist, you'll lead the design and development of engineered in vitro lung systems that bridge the gap between basic research and clinical translation. Your work will directly support our pipeline of novel therapeutics, establishing yourself as a scientific leader in this emerging field.

Core Duties

• Direct the development and optimization of complex in vitro lung models to replicate human respiratory biology and disease mechanisms
• Design and execute rigorous experiments evaluating therapeutic candidates using engineered lung systems
• Lead cross-functional scientific teams to integrate advanced cellular, tissue engineering, and analytical approaches
• Establish protocols and best practices for lung modeling within the CiS Laboratory
• Mentor junior scientists and collaborate with internal and external research partners
• Present findings at scientific forums and contribute to peer-reviewed publications

What We're Looking For

• PhD in Biology, Pharmacology, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field
• 5+ years of scientific experience in respiratory biology, in vitro modeling, tissue engineering, or related disciplines
• Demonstrated leadership in research project management and team mentorship
• Strong expertise in cell culture systems, tissue engineering, and relevant analytical techniques
• Track record of scientific innovation, including publications and presentations
• Excellent communication skills and ability to thrive in collaborative research environments
