The City of Flint is seeking a dedicated Code Enforcement Inspector II to work full time in Flint, Genesee County, ensuring residential properties meet local health and safety standards.
About the Role
This position supports the city’s mission to maintain safe, habitable housing by conducting inspections, documenting violations, and collaborating with property owners to achieve compliance.
What You'll Do
- Perform interior and exterior inspections of rental units and single‑family homes to identify code violations.
- Draft detailed inspection reports, notices of violation, and corrective action plans.
- Conduct follow‑up visits to verify that required repairs have been completed.
- Issue citations and, when needed, prepare cases for administrative hearings or court proceedings.
- Maintain accurate records in the municipal inspection database and prepare monthly activity summaries.
- Work closely with fire, building, and health departments to address complex habitability concerns.
- Provide clear guidance to landlords and tenants on applicable municipal codes and remediation steps.
- Stay current with updates to state and local housing regulations through ongoing training.
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional coursework in building inspection, public administration, or a related field is advantageous.
- At least two years of experience conducting housing, property, or code enforcement inspections.
- Solid knowledge of Michigan housing codes, Flint ordinances, and related state statutes.
- Ability to interpret technical documents, draw sound conclusions, and write clear, concise reports.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with residents, property owners, and legal personnel.
- Proficiency with standard office software and the city’s inspection management system.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for site visits throughout the city.
- Willingness to satisfy the city’s pre‑employment screening process, which includes confirmation of legal work authorization and compliance with all relevant regulations, civil service guidelines, and collective bargaining terms.
