Canonical is hiring a remote Senior HR Generalist – EMEA to help build a modern, globally minded people function for one of the world's foremost open source software companies. If you thrive in a distributed, high-performance environment, this is your chance to shape HR for the future across the EMEA region.

About the Role

As a Senior HR Generalist – EMEA at Canonical, you will act as both a strategic driver and a hands-on practitioner across regional and global people initiatives. Working remotely from within the EMEA region, you will join an international HR team delivering accurate, compliant, and scalable operations throughout the entire employee life cycle, while partnering closely with leadership in your area. An analytical mindset, strong attention to detail, and the ability to read trends in data are essential to success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run precise, compliant HR operations on time and to the highest standard of accuracy.
  • Collaborate with the EMEA HR Manager and Global Head of HR to create impact across all regions.
  • Own people processes including onboarding, performance reviews, talent development, succession planning, and engagement and culture programs.
  • Advise managers on performance management, organizational design, rewards, employee engagement, and workforce planning.
  • Work alongside the HRIS team to build and improve day-to-day HR administration.
  • Coach people managers through the full range of employee relations matters across multiple countries.
  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion, and lead the design of new policies and global HR projects.

Qualifications

  • An outstanding academic record at both secondary and university level.
  • HR experience leading cross-regional initiatives within a technology business.
  • EMEA regional HR knowledge (France, Germany, and/or the UK a plus), with insight into local labor law.
  • A track record of business partnering with senior stakeholders and mentoring others.
  • Strong project management skills, comfort in a remote-first setting, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Fluent business English, self-motivation, and willingness to travel up to four times a year for internal events.
  • Nice to have: immigration and mobility experience, payroll or benefits oversight, HR systems knowledge, professional HR certifications, and facilitation skills.

Working in Austria

This role spans many EMEA markets (Austria among them). Austria is a landlocked Central European federation; Vienna is the capital and largest city. Expect multi-country HR work rather than a single-office local life—time zones, labor rules, and languages vary by country.

Build the skills for this role

    • EMEA employment basics (contracts, leave, terminations by country)
    • Employee relations and manager coaching
    • HRIS hygiene and process design
    • Cross-border communication in a product/open-source culture

    • Walk through a complex ER case and how you balanced risk, fairness, and business needs
    • Explain multi-country policy consistency without one-size-fits-all
    • Show how you partner with engineering/product managers in a remote-first setup

Strong fit if you enjoy senior generalist work across EMEA jurisdictions at a Ubuntu-focused commercial open-source company—not a single-site admin role. Less fit if you need fixed office routine or pure specialist (only L&D or only talent) scope.
