About the Role
This senior-level position serves as a key legal resource within the city's legal department, managing complex municipal law matters across assigned practice areas. Working under general supervisory direction, you'll exercise independent legal judgment, mentor junior attorneys, and advise city leadership on governance, compliance, and regulatory issues that impact municipal operations.
What You'll Do
- Prepare, review, and interpret municipal statutes, ordinances, and regulations within assigned legal practice areas
- Provide authoritative legal counsel to city departments, elected officials, and municipal boards
- Research and analyze complex legal questions affecting city policy, operations, and risk exposure
- Draft and review agreements, legal memoranda, ordinances, and other municipal legal documents
- Advise on compliance matters, liability assessment, and risk management strategies
- Supervise and mentor legal staff as assigned, contributing to team development and knowledge-sharing
- Represent the city's legal interests in negotiations, administrative proceedings, and court matters
What We're Looking For
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
- Current license to practice law in the United States
- Substantial professional experience in municipal law, government legal practice, or related field
- Demonstrated proficiency in legal research, writing, and analysis
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Ability to manage multiple complex matters and competing priorities
- Understanding of municipal government operations and commitment to public service
