The Opportunity
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn's premier academic medical center, is seeking a dedicated Plant Utilities Engineer 1 to maintain and optimize the mechanical, electrical, and building systems essential to our operations. Key Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical building systems
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections to ensure code compliance and system reliability
- Monitor utility consumption and system performance; maintain detailed operational logs and documentation
- Identify and resolve equipment failures and system issues, minimizing disruption to medical center operations
- Coordinate with maintenance and engineering teams on repairs, upgrades, and emergency response
- Respond to emergency situations and after-hours facility needs as required
Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or associate degree in a technical field
- Technical certification or training in HVAC, electrical systems, or mechanical engineering
- 2+ years of hands-on experience operating building systems in a hospital, healthcare, or institutional facility
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Strong troubleshooting, mechanical reasoning, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work flexible shifts, including evenings and weekends
- EPA certification or certification in refrigeration, electrical, or HVAC preferred
