About the Role

As Legal Advisor II, you will provide specialized counsel on labor and employment law matters affecting the Secretary of State's operations. You'll work directly with agency leadership to navigate complex employment regulations, litigation, and statutory compliance. This role combines independent legal analysis with collaborative problem-solving in a government setting where your advice directly supports organizational operations.

What You'll Do

  • Advise the General Counsel and agency leadership on labor and employment law issues, including recruitment, hiring practices, discipline, and termination
  • Draft and review employment contracts, policies, and legal documents
  • Investigate employment-related complaints and conduct legal analysis
  • Represent the agency in employment disputes, arbitrations, and administrative proceedings as needed
  • Ensure departmental compliance with state and federal employment law, including Title VII, ADA, FMLA, and Illinois wage laws
  • Provide guidance on personnel management to department heads and HR staff

What We're Looking For

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and active Illinois law license
  • Minimum 3–5 years of labor and employment law experience (private practice, in-house, or government counsel preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state employment statutes and regulations
  • Excellent legal writing, research, and analytical skills
  • Ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly to non-lawyers
  • Professional judgment, discretion, and ability to work confidentially
  • Organized, deadline-driven, and capable of managing multiple priorities

Compensation & Benefits

Salary ranges from $6,019 to $7,917 monthly, commensurate with experience. State employee benefits package included.
