About the Role
This is a contract position for a court-certified interpreter serving the Chicago metropolitan area. Working remotely, you'll provide professional interpretation services that meet Illinois court certification standards and judicial ethics requirements. You'll be part of a team dedicated to ensuring equal access to justice for individuals with limited English proficiency participating in court proceedings, depositions, and related legal matters.
What You'll Do
- Provide accurate, culturally appropriate sight and consecutive interpretation during court hearings, depositions, and legal proceedings
- Maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality in all courtroom interactions
- Adhere to the Code of Professional Responsibility for Interpreters and all applicable court rules
- Communicate clearly with judicial officers, attorneys, and parties to ensure interpretation accuracy and procedural compliance
- Prepare for assignments by reviewing case materials and specialized legal terminology in both languages
- Document interpretation services and maintain required compliance records
Requirements
- Current court interpreter certification in Illinois or equivalent certification recognized by Illinois courts
- Fluency in English and the target language at native or near-native proficiency (speaking, listening, and comprehension)
- Comprehensive knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures in both languages
- Demonstrated ability to interpret accurately under pressure in formal legal proceedings
- Strong listening and communication skills with meticulous attention to detail and nuance
- Commitment to professional ethics, strict confidentiality, and absolute impartiality
- Reliable internet connection and quiet workspace suitable for remote court work
- Flexibility to accommodate court schedules, including early morning and afternoon availability
