Staff Scientist

About the Role

Based in the Thousand Oaks office within the California Division, this Staff Scientist role supports environmental teams on field and office tasks of varying complexity. You will contribute to assessment, monitoring, and documentation efforts while building skills that advance toward project leadership. The work sits within a fast-paced setting focused on environmental, water resources, and stormwater projects, with an expected annual pay range of $60,000–$75,000 USD.

Core Duties

• Travel to project sites primarily throughout Southern California to conduct environmental assessment, monitoring, and soil and groundwater data collection.
• Obtain samples of soil, groundwater, soil-gas, air, and building materials as project needs require.
• Direct field assessment work such as soil logging, well installation, air monitoring, safety compliance, and geophysical surveys.
• Compile, evaluate, and interpret chemical data across multiple media.
• Enter field and laboratory results into spreadsheet tables and project reports.
• Strengthen technical writing skills with a clear path toward project management responsibilities.

What You Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, environmental science, or a closely related discipline.
• Prior environmental field sampling, documentation, and data-collection experience preferred.
• Solid technical writing, ability to manage multiple tasks, and a strong safety mindset with knowledge of safe work practices.
• Comfort collaborating with others while also working independently; skill in planning permits, schedules, and resources.
• Capacity to guide field subcontractors and uphold safety requirements on site.
• Hands-on light construction or environmental experience is a plus; familiarity with data management and report preparation expected.
• Ability to help prepare or edit Phase I and Phase II ESA reports preferred; 40-hour HAZWOPER with 8-hour refresher and supervisor certification preferred.
• Valid driver’s license, sound driving record, and reliable transportation required; strong verbal and written communication skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office, with database, drafting, or project-management tools a plus.
