The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is hiring a Deputy General Counsel/Unit Chief to oversee Real Estate Development & Planning legal matters in New York City. This part-time position offers the opportunity to lead a critical unit within our legal department, working on complex real estate transactions and planning initiatives at our 2 Broadway headquarters.

About the Role

You'll serve as a senior legal leader responsible for managing all aspects of real estate law, property development, and planning compliance across the MTA. Based in our lower Manhattan office, you'll work standard business hours (9:00 am through 5:30 pm, 7.5 hours per day) with flexibility as business needs require. Reporting to the First Deputy General Counsel for Transactions, you'll guide the real estate unit through complex legal challenges while maintaining strategic oversight of all property-related matters.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the Real Estate Development & Planning legal unit and supervise its staff
  • Oversee property acquisition, disposition, and development transactions
  • Advise on zoning, land use compliance, and New York City planning regulations
  • Review and negotiate contracts, leases, and transaction agreements
  • Provide strategic counsel to MTA leadership on real estate legal risks and opportunities
  • Coordinate with government agencies, developers, and stakeholders on property initiatives

What We're Looking For

  • Juris Doctor degree with active New York State bar admission
  • Significant experience in real estate transactions, development law, or property counsel
  • Demonstrated expertise in New York City zoning and land use law
  • Strong management and leadership experience
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills
  • Background with government agencies or public transit systems is a plus

Compensation

This part-time position offers a salary range of $192,068 to $240,085. Candidates are considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
