Join Gusto, Inc. as a Staff Engineer on the Business Money Engineering team, a remote-first role based in San Francisco, New York, or across North America. You'll architect and scale financial management tools that help hundreds of thousands of small businesses manage cash flow, payroll, and accounting with confidence.

About the Role

The Business Money team at Gusto develops a comprehensive suite of financial products—including bill pay, invoicing, expense tracking, payroll financing, and cash flow dashboards—that empower small and medium-sized businesses to take control of their finances. As a Staff Engineer, you'll own the architecture and delivery of major initiatives that shape how small business owners interact with their financial data. You'll drive technical decisions from concept through launch, collaborate across product, design, data science, and compliance, and help establish best practices for AI-powered development. This is a high-impact position where you'll help scale what has become Gusto's fastest-growing business vertical.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

• Design and build scalable backend systems and distributed platforms that power Gusto's business finance offerings
• Own end-to-end project delivery, from technical design and architecture to deployment and post-launch monitoring
• Lead complex technical initiatives involving multiple engineers across multiple quarters
• Integrate AI tools strategically into product development workflows and mentor your team in modern AI practices
• Solve ambiguous problems and help teams navigate tradeoffs through clear technical communication
• Collaborate cross-functionally to translate product requirements into resilient, well-tested systems

What We're Looking For

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
• Proven expertise architecting and building large-scale, resilient distributed systems and software platforms
• Demonstrated technical leadership managing multiple engineers on multi-quarter projects
• Proficiency with AI tools and commitment to adopting evolving AI practices
• Comfort navigating ambiguity and driving rapid iteration cycles
• Strong communication skills and ability to facilitate technical tradeoff decisions
• Fintech, accounting, or financial services experience is a plus
• Familiarity with Ruby, Rails, GraphQL, React, TypeScript, and AWS is beneficial
