Expression of Interest – Bridge and Structures Inspectors (Contractor Engagement)
We are representing a leading infrastructure engineering consultancy seeking to build a network of experienced Bridge and Structural Inspectors for contractor engagement opportunities across the UK. This is an expression of interest for future assignments, not a live vacancy tied to a specific project.
Our client delivers complex infrastructure projects and provides specialist inspection, surveying, and asset management services across highway, railway, and civil structures portfolios. They work with major asset owners, local authorities, and framework clients throughout the UK and are expanding their contractor talent pool to support growing inspection requirements.
Applications are welcomed from inspectors based anywhere in the UK, with particular interest in candidates based in Scotland. Site travel will normally be required.
Responsibilities
Depending on assignment and competence level, responsibilities may include:
- Conducting general inspections, principal inspections with close-up examination, and safety/special/reactive inspections
- Performing inspections for assessment, monitoring, and condition surveys including defect investigations and condition scoring
- Inspecting highway structures on trunk road and local authority networks, railway structures, and ancillary infrastructure
- Planning and coordinating inspection works, including access arrangements and traffic or rail control measures
- Identifying, photographing, and classifying defects; recording severity and extent; recognising urgent safety issues
- Producing accurate inspection reports, condition assessments, and recommendations including Bridge Condition Indicators
- Working on diverse asset types: road and rail bridges, footbridges, culverts, retaining walls, tunnels, sign/signal gantries, and structures over watercourses
- Team leadership and technical review (for appropriately qualified Senior Inspectors)
What We're Looking For
Essential skills and experience:
- Relevant UK bridge or structures inspection experience with a clear record of inspection roles and asset types
- Working knowledge of applicable standards and client procedures, including NR/L3/CIV/006 and/or DMRB CS 450 where relevant
- Ability to identify defects, assess severity, recognise safety issues, and produce accurate reports
- Knowledge of structural materials, deterioration mechanisms, structural behaviour, and inspection limitations
- Experience with major asset owners such as National Highways, Transport Scotland, Network Rail, local authorities, or comparable organisations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience across various construction forms: concrete, steel, masonry, timber, composite, and post-tensioned structures
Required or advantageous depending on assignment:
- Current Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (BICS) certification at Inspector or Senior Inspector level (required where mandated by client)
- BEng/MEng in civil or structural engineering, or equivalent inspection experience
- Current working-at-height and confined-space competence
- IPAF/MEWP, IRATA rope-access, PASMA mobile access towers, ladder, or other relevant access qualifications
- Safe Working Near Water (SWNW) or equivalent competence
- Safe use of Trolley Equipment or Rail Trolley controller certification
- Valid CSCS or other required site-access certification
- For rail work: current Personal Track Safety (PTS) and other role-specific competences; SSSTS or SMSTS for supervisory duties
- Network Rail Competencies STE2–7 as defined in NR/SP/CTM/017
Please note: Some positions may be subject to security clearance or security assurance levels. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate clearance for specific assignments, in line with client and sector requirements. Additional nationality or residency criteria may apply due to national security obligations.
