Lead Employment Counsel

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential enterprise software organization in their search for a Lead Employment Counsel. This is a fully remote position serving as the first line of legal support for the People team across a global, multi-jurisdiction operation. You'll advise directly on employment matters, manage key legal and HR vendor relationships, and operate as a trusted business partner embedded within the organization.

Responsibilities

• Serve as first-line support for employment legal questions, resolving most matters directly rather than routing to outside counsel
• Partner with People Business Partners to advise on employee relations, performance management, terminations, leaves, and accommodations
• Manage severe employee relations cases directly with minimal escalation
• Own relationships with HR vendors and employer-of-record platforms, including contract terms, service levels, and escalations
• Manage external legal counsel relationships, including scope evaluation, spend management, and engagement decisions
• Ensure employment law compliance across all operating jurisdictions, with particular focus on DACH region requirements
• Partner with Legal and Finance teams on cross-functional projects involving employment law and compliance
• Identify and implement AI tools to improve legal support efficiency
• Track and reduce external counsel spend against established baselines

What We're Looking For

• J.D. or equivalent law degree with active bar admission in at least one jurisdiction
• 8+ years of employment law experience, including significant in-house experience at a global, multi-jurisdiction company
• Deep, current knowledge of DACH employment law (works councils, termination protections, co-determination)
• Broad experience across other global jurisdictions beyond DACH
• Proven experience managing outside counsel and HR vendor relationships, including EOR platforms
• Track record of advising HR and People teams directly, translating legal risk into practical business guidance
• Strong judgment and comfort making autonomous decisions without excessive escalation
• Experience using AI tools to improve legal or compliance workflows
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to build trust across functions
