Lead Employment Counsel

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential enterprise software organization in their search for a Lead Employment Counsel. This is a fully remote position supporting a global, fast-growing technology company that operates across multiple jurisdictions with a distributed workforce.

This role serves as the first line of legal support for the People function, providing hands-on employment law guidance, managing vendor relationships, and reducing reliance on outside counsel. You'll operate as an embedded business partner, advising directly on complex employee relations matters and ensuring compliance across all jurisdictions where the organization operates.

Responsibilities

• Serve as primary legal advisor for employment matters, resolving most questions directly without escalating to external counsel
• Partner with People Business Partners on employee relations, performance management, terminations, leaves, and accommodations
• Manage severe employee relations cases directly with autonomy and sound judgment
• Own relationships with global employer-of-record platforms and external legal counsel, including contract terms, service levels, and performance management
• Ensure employment law compliance across all operating jurisdictions, with particular focus on DACH region requirements including works councils, termination protections, and co-determination
• Collaborate with Legal and Finance teams on cross-functional projects involving employment law and compliance
• Identify and implement AI tools to improve efficiency of legal support delivery
• Track and strategically reduce external counsel spend against established baselines

What We're Looking For

• J.D. or equivalent law degree with active bar admission in at least one jurisdiction
• 8+ years of employment law experience, including significant in-house experience at a global, multi-jurisdiction company
• Deep, current knowledge of DACH employment law (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), plus broad experience across other global jurisdictions
• Proven experience managing outside counsel and HR vendor relationships, including employer-of-record platforms
• Track record of advising HR and People teams directly, translating legal risk into practical, business-pragmatic guidance
• Strong judgment and comfort making autonomous decisions without over-reliance on external counsel escalation
• Experience using AI tools to improve legal or compliance workflows
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to build trust across People, Legal, and Finance functions
