Senior Financial Controls Accountant

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology-driven retail organisation seeking a Senior Financial Controls Accountant for their Hatfield location. This is a hands-on role within a tight-knit second line of defence team, offering significant autonomy to shape and maintain the financial controls framework. You'll balance detailed execution with strategic governance, working directly with the Head of Financial Controls to drive everything from controls testing to UK Corporate Governance Code compliance, external audit coordination, and risk register management.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and continuously monitor the group's financial controls environment, including business processes (e.g., Record to Report) and IT General Controls for finance applications
• Act as a subject matter expert and business partner to finance and non-finance stakeholders, providing guidance and challenge on financial controls methodology
• Design, build, and maintain Financial Risk and Control Matrices (RACMs) and manage first line Self-Assurance and Certification processes
• Coordinate and support provision of financial controls evidence to external auditors for both business process and ITGC requirements
• Support the Finance Risk Register and manage financial risk inputs to the Fraud Risk Assessment
• Conduct controls testing including test of design, implementation, and operating effectiveness
• Review Segregation of Duties across key financial processes and systems, identifying conflicts and supporting resolution
• Deliver tailored training, workshops, and advice to build visibility and ownership of financial controls across the organisation
• Contribute to committee papers on financial control matters including Audit & Risk Committee submissions
• Develop control metrics and dashboards to monitor the control environment across end-to-end processes
• Engage early in process and system changes to identify control weaknesses and design mitigating controls
• Support material controls submissions as required by UK Corporate Governance Code provision 29

What We're Looking For

• 3+ years Post-Qualified Experience (PQE) with ACA, ACCA, IIA, or equivalent professional qualification
• Demonstrable experience in a similar role within second line, Internal Audit, or other assurance functions
• In-depth knowledge of RACMs and controls testing concepts including walkthroughs, sampling, and various test types
• Thorough understanding of internal control processes for multinational operations and best practice for risk-appropriate financial and operational assurance
• Working knowledge of IT General Controls
• Excellent stakeholder communication skills including the ability to present to and influence senior stakeholders
• Proven ability to explain technical matters to non-expert audiences through strong presentation and report writing
• Capacity to deliver with a high degree of autonomy while maintaining collaboration
• Highly organised with strong prioritisation and deadline management skills
• Strong analytical and complex problem-solving abilities with innovative thinking
• Enthusiastic, confident team player able to forge strong cross-functional partnerships
