Scientist, Bioinformatics

Arc Institute, an independent nonprofit research organization headquartered in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, is seeking a full-time Scientist, Bioinformatics to advance breakthrough research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biology. In this role, you'll develop computational methodologies to uncover root causes of complex diseases while enjoying the intellectual freedom and sustained funding that nonprofit science enables.

About the Role

As Scientist, Bioinformatics, you'll lead computational research initiatives that translate complex biological questions into data-driven discoveries. This full-time position combines rigorous algorithm development with cross-disciplinary collaboration, leveraging long-term funding to pursue ambitious, high-impact science without the constraints of traditional grant cycles.

What You'll Do

• Design, implement, and optimize bioinformatics pipelines for analyzing large-scale genomic and biological datasets
• Develop statistical and machine learning methods to extract biological insights and identify patterns in complex data
• Collaborate with wet-lab researchers, computational scientists, and AI specialists to translate research questions into analytical solutions
• Contribute findings to peer-reviewed publications and scientific conferences
• Build and maintain bioinformatics software, databases, and computational infrastructure
• Mentor junior researchers and share expertise across the institute

What We're Looking For

• Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, or related discipline
• Strong programming skills in Python, R, or equivalent computational languages
• Hands-on experience with genomic data analysis, Next-Generation Sequencing, or large-scale biological datasets
• Solid foundation in statistics, quantitative methods, and algorithm design
• Experience with version control, reproducible research practices, and scientific computing workflows
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities coupled with scientific curiosity
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams
