Public Safety – Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Officer

Sacred Heart University seeks a dedicated Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Officer to join our Fairfield campus and lead comprehensive safety and compliance initiatives across all university operations. In this full-time role, you'll develop, implement, and enforce health and safety policies that protect our faculty, staff, students, and visitors while safeguarding our environment.

About the Role

As our Environmental Health and Safety Officer, you'll be the driving force behind regulatory compliance and risk management across the university. You'll work directly with academic departments, facilities teams, and administrative leadership to maintain the highest safety standards and ensure adherence to federal, state, and local requirements.

What You'll Do

• Develop, coordinate, and evaluate university-wide safety policies and procedures aligned with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and other regulatory frameworks
• Conduct comprehensive safety audits, inspections, and hazard assessments across campus facilities and operations
• Investigate occupational incidents and accidents, document findings, and implement corrective measures
• Provide safety training and education programs to faculty, staff, and students across diverse work environments
• Monitor regulatory changes and update institutional practices to maintain compliance
• Manage documentation, record-keeping, and reporting requirements for all safety and environmental programs
• Collaborate with facilities, HR, and department heads to integrate safety into daily operations
• Develop emergency preparedness and incident response protocols

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or related field (or equivalent professional experience)
• Professional certification such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) preferred
• Demonstrated expertise in OSHA compliance, industrial hygiene, and workplace safety standards
• Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and sustainable practices
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for training and stakeholder engagement
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across departments
• Detail-oriented mindset with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
