Power Subject Matter Expert (SME) — Chemistry and Water Treatment

International Paper is hiring a Power Subject Matter Expert (SME) — Chemistry and Water Treatment for a full-time position in the United States. As a technical leader in our power operations, you'll shape water chemistry strategy and drive operational excellence across our manufacturing facilities.

The Opportunity

We need a deeply experienced chemistry and water treatment professional to serve as our technical authority on power system chemistry. In this role, you'll solve complex technical challenges, establish best practices, and mentor our operations teams—directly contributing to the efficiency, safety, and environmental compliance of our power generation infrastructure.

What You'll Accomplish

• Design and refine water chemistry protocols and treatment approaches for power generation systems
• Resolve complex technical problems in water treatment, boiler systems, and related equipment
• Ensure full compliance with environmental and industry regulations across all facilities
• Partner with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to optimize system performance
• Develop technical capability in facility teams through training and hands-on guidance
• Travel to manufacturing locations to provide on-site expertise (up to approximately 60% of time)

What We Need From You

• Extensive professional background in power plant chemistry, industrial water treatment, or boiler system operations
• Deep technical knowledge of water chemistry principles, treatment methodologies, and industry standards
• Superior analytical and problem-solving skills with practical, hands-on troubleshooting ability
• Proven ability to communicate technical concepts clearly across different audiences
• Strong focus on regulatory compliance and environmental stewardship
• Ability to work effectively across departments and at multiple facility locations

Position Details

Full-time salaried position. Compensation range: $125,900 to $167,800 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
