State and Local Government (SLG) – Consultant

Guidehouse is hiring a Consultant to join our State and Local Government (SLG) consulting practice in Columbia, South Carolina. In this role, you'll work directly with government agencies and public sector organizations to analyze operations, develop strategic recommendations, and guide implementation of meaningful improvements.

About the Role

As a Management Consultant focused on state and local government clients, you'll partner with agency leaders to strengthen performance and operational effectiveness. You'll take on varied projects—from organizational assessments to service delivery improvements—working across different departments and government functions. Travel to client sites will account for up to 25% of your time as you build relationships and gather insights directly from stakeholders.

What You'll Do

• Conduct comprehensive analysis of client operations, processes, and organizational structures
• Interview government leadership, staff, and stakeholders to understand challenges and opportunities
• Synthesize findings and develop evidence-based recommendations aligned with client goals
• Support implementation efforts and help agencies translate recommendations into action
• Work collaboratively with senior consultants and project leads on client engagements
• Prepare presentations and reports that communicate findings clearly to government decision-makers
• Contribute to business development and pursuit of new public sector opportunities

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in business, public administration, public policy, economics, engineering, or related discipline
• Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving capabilities
• Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal
• Ability to build rapport with diverse stakeholder groups and government professionals
• Solid organizational and project management skills
• Genuine interest in public sector consulting or government operations
• Availability to travel up to 25% of the time to Columbia-area and regional client sites
