Senior Relay Technician – Utility & High-Voltage Protection

Senior Relay Technician - Utility & High-Voltage Protection at Utilities Service, LLC in Killeen, Bell County is a full-time position dedicated to testing, commissioning, and maintaining protective relay systems that keep medium- and high-voltage substations operating safely and reliably.

About the Role

In this role you will work directly with substation equipment to verify that protective relays function correctly during normal and fault conditions. Your expertise helps prevent outages, protects equipment, and supports the overall integrity of the electric grid.

What You'll Do

• Perform acceptance, maintenance, and diagnostic tests on electromechanical, solid‑state, and microprocessor‑based relays.
• Commission new relay panels and integrate them into existing substation automation schemes.
• Troubleshoot relay malfunctions, analyze test data, and recommend corrective actions.
• Maintain accurate test records, update documentation, and ensure compliance with NERC, IEEE, and utility‑specific standards.
• Coordinate with substation crews, engineers, and project managers to schedule work and minimize service interruptions.
• Provide technical guidance to junior technicians and participate in safety briefings and tool‑box talks.

What We're Looking For

• Proven experience testing and maintaining protective relays in a utility or industrial setting.
• Strong understanding of relay protection principles, fault current calculations, and scheme logic.
• Proficiency with test sets such as Megger, Doble, Omicron, or equivalent equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret elementary and schematic diagrams, AC/DC control circuits, and relay logic.
• Familiarity with industry standards including NERC PRC, IEEE C37.90, and applicable utility specifications.
• Excellent troubleshooting skills and a methodical approach to documenting test results.
• Commitment to safety practices and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to substation sites within the service area.
