Director of Learning & Development (E&S Segment)

The Director of Learning & Development (E&S Segment) at Berkley leads learning strategy and talent development initiatives for the Excess & Surplus lines business unit based in Moorestown, Burlington County. This full‑time role partners with senior leaders to design, deliver, and measure programs that build expertise, drive performance, and support the company’s growth objectives.

About the Role

As the Learning & Development director for the E&S segment, you will shape the educational framework that equips underwriters, claims professionals, and brokers with the knowledge needed to navigate specialty risks. You will report to the segment head and collaborate closely with HR, business unit leaders, and external providers to ensure learning solutions align with strategic priorities.

What You'll Do

• Develop and execute a multi‑year learning roadmap that addresses skill gaps and emerging industry trends for the E&S business.
• Design blended learning experiences—including instructor‑led workshops, virtual classrooms, e‑learning modules, and on‑the‑job coaching—tailored to underwriting, claims, and distribution audiences.
• Partner with subject‑matter experts to create curricula that cover product knowledge, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and sales effectiveness.
• Oversee a small team of instructional designers, facilitators, and learning analysts, providing guidance and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
• Implement measurement frameworks (Kirkpatrick levels, analytics, surveys) to evaluate program impact and report ROI to senior leadership.
• Manage vendor relationships and learning technology platforms, ensuring content is accessible, up‑to‑date, and compliant with corporate standards.
• Stay current on adult learning principles, insurance industry developments, and emerging tools such as microlearning and AI‑driven content.

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in human resources, organizational development, education, or a related field; advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., CPLP, SHRM‑SCP) preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive experience in learning and development, with at least five years leading L&D functions within insurance, financial services, or a similarly regulated industry.
• Proven track record of designing and delivering large‑scale learning programs that have demonstrably improved performance metrics.
• Strong expertise in instructional design models, adult learning theory, and modern delivery modalities (virtual, blended, mobile).
• Excellent stakeholder management skills, able to influence senior leaders and translate business needs into learning solutions.
• Analytical mindset with experience using learning analytics, LMS reporting, and data‑driven decision making.
• Effective communicator with polished presentation abilities and a collaborative leadership style.
