The Opportunity
Partner with the Air Force Research Laboratory's Biological Materials and Processing Research Team to pioneer the use of in silico modeling in microbial host development. This role centers on designing, evaluating, and optimizing microorganisms for next-generation bioproduction processes and functional material synthesis. You'll apply computational science to solve real-world challenges in biomanufacturing and materials science, contributing to innovations that advance national defense and industrial biotechnology capabilities.
Core Duties
- Build and refine genome-scale metabolic models of microbial organisms
- Perform in silico strain design and optimization to enhance bioproduction capabilities
- Evaluate computational predictions against experimental results and iteratively improve models
- Conduct simulations to predict metabolic behavior and bioprocess performance
- Collaborate with experimental biologists and process engineers to translate computational insights into practical applications
- Document methodologies, validate results, and communicate findings to cross-functional research teams
Who We're Looking For
- Strong foundation in microbial metabolism, biochemistry, or systems biology
- Demonstrated expertise in metabolic modeling tools and computational biology techniques
- Proficiency in programming languages relevant to scientific computing (Python, MATLAB, R, or similar)
- Experience with genome-scale model construction, curation, and simulation
- Problem-solving mindset with ability to troubleshoot complex biological and computational challenges
- Excellent communication skills to translate technical work for collaborators with diverse backgrounds
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline; advanced degree preferred
