Role Overview

The Survey Crew Chief role at Atwell, LLC in Munster, Indiana centers on hands-on leadership of outdoor survey operations. You will direct instrument personnel through boundary, topographic, ALTA, control, wetland, tree, and houseline surveys as well as construction staking and bench loops. This full-time field position requires independent decision-making from engineering plans, accurate data handling with software such as Trimble Business Center, and physical readiness for demanding site conditions while mentoring team members and improving field processes. Compensation ranges from $40.22 to $47.02 USD.

What You'll Do

• Lead daily survey crew activities, guide instrument operators, and act as the primary on-site contact for clients and project staff
• Execute commercial building column staking, as-constructed surveys, record drawings, control surveys, bench loops, and construction staking with consistent precision
• Interpret plans, identify field issues early, and make practical adjustments within each project scope
• Upload and download data and calibration files, maintain equipment and vehicles, stock supplies, and produce clear field notes and sketches
• Report time accurately and keep Survey Project Managers, staff surveyors, clients, and site superintendents informed of progress, workload, and scope changes through regular updates
• Train and coach instrument personnel, survey interns, and emerging crew chiefs while refining crew procedures and quality practices

Requirements

• High school diploma or surveying degree combined with 5+ years of relevant experience
• Valid driver’s license and proven ability to direct field survey crews and instrument personnel
• Strong technical, communication, and organizational skills plus fluency in English
• Comfort working outdoors for extended periods in varied weather and terrain at construction sites, landfills, and traffic areas
• Physical capacity to lift and carry survey instruments weighing up to 75 pounds over rough ground, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, clear vegetation, dig holes, and pound stakes
• Ability to stand, walk, reach, talk, hear, and use hands effectively; vision that includes close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, and focus adjustment
• Self-motivation, attention to detail, and ownership of deadlines, accuracy, and client service
