About the Role

Working within the hospital laboratory, the Clinical Lab Assistant I ensures that blood and other specimens are obtained safely, labeled correctly, and routed to the appropriate testing areas. This role is essential for maintaining timely and accurate diagnostic results that guide patient care.

What You'll Do

• Collect blood samples using venipuncture, capillary, or arterial techniques in accordance with department standards.
• Select the proper collection tubes with the correct additives for each ordered test.
• Prepare patients for draws, explain the procedure, and ensure their comfort and safety.
• Provide appropriate after‑care at the puncture site to reduce bruising or infection risk.
• Verify patient identity and label specimens accurately to maintain traceability throughout the workflow.
• Sort, verify labeling, and enter specimen orders into the laboratory information system.
• Distribute samples to the relevant sections of the lab and retrieve completed results when needed.
• Maintain a clean, organized workstation and adhere to all safety and infection‑control policies.
• Assist with inventory management of collection supplies and notify supervisors of low stock.
• Participate in ongoing training and competency assessments to stay current with best practices.

What We're Looking For

• High school diploma or equivalent; phlebotomy or medical laboratory assistant certification preferred.
• Prior experience in a clinical laboratory, hospital, or outpatient draw station is advantageous.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures precisely.
• Excellent interpersonal skills for interacting with patients and healthcare team members.
• Basic computer proficiency for entering data into laboratory information systems.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and handle specimens safely.
• Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and complying with HIPAA regulations.
