Accounting Lead

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential cleantech scale-up operating in Germany's energy transition sector. Our client is building the finance infrastructure to support mid-sized companies through complex regulatory environments, and they need an experienced Accounting Lead to take ownership of their finance operations during a period of rapid growth.

This is a permanent, full-time role based in Berlin, reporting directly to senior leadership. You'll have genuine ownership over accounting and finance operations, with particular focus on redesigning Quote-to-Cash processes from reactive firefighting into scalable, automated systems.

Responsibilities

Quote-to-Cash & Revenue Recognition

• Own invoicing, accounts receivable, and dunning end-to-end, redesigning them into scalable, partially automated processes in collaboration with Business Operations, Sales, and Technology teams
• Establish and maintain revenue recognition policies across complex product lines, including documentation and audit defense
• Structure billing-relevant customer and contract data across systems

Accounting Operations

• Own monthly and annual close processes under HGB (German GAAP), setting quality standards and cadence for your team
• Coordinate tax compliance with external advisors, including VAT and internal controls
• Redesign core accounting processes with focus on automation and audit readiness, including process documentation, close checklists, controls, and audit trails
• Lead the organization's first full external audit as primary point of contact

Team Leadership

• Provide functional and disciplinary leadership, including hiring, performance management, coaching, and professional development
• Coach team members on prioritization, structure, and project delivery beyond technical accounting skills
• Collaborate cross-functionally with business operations, technology, sales, treasury, FP&A, external advisors, and auditors

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

• 6+ years of hands-on accounting experience with strong HGB foundation and ownership of monthly and annual close processes, including audit experience
• Proven track record of structurally redesigning Quote-to-Cash processes—not just running them. You must be able to demonstrate specific Q2C transformations you've led, including what changed, why, and the measurable impact
• People leadership experience with full ownership of at least two direct reports, including hiring, performance management, and development. You should be able to articulate how team members grew under your leadership
• Process design and automation mindset with strong opinions about modern, lean tooling
• Business-fluent English and German (B2+ level minimum) to work effectively with German accounting standards, advisors, and auditors

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in energy markets or commodity trading environments
• Experience with ERP selection or implementation
• Familiarity with IFRS
• Hands-on experience with DATEV, financial automation tools, or modern finance tech stacks
