Analytics Engineering Manager, Data Platform & Governance

About This Opportunity

We are representing a confidential technology client in their search for an Analytics Engineering Manager focused on Data Platform & Governance. This is a remote role open to candidates anywhere in the world.

Our client operates a centralized Redshift data warehouse with dbt modeling, Airflow orchestration, and Segment event tracking already in place. The infrastructure exists—your mission is to make it trustworthy and keep it that way. Currently undergoing a migration to Lightdash as their unified BI platform, they need someone who can establish governance as a dedicated function rather than a side responsibility.

This is a first-of-its-kind role: you'll be the inaugural owner of data governance, responsible for the roadmap that makes their data more trustworthy each quarter. You'll start as an individual contributor with full ownership, then hire and manage a Lead Analytics Engineer as the function scales.

Responsibilities

Strategic Ownership

• Build and own the data roadmap by discovering what product, marketing, operations, and finance need from data, then prioritizing platform investments
• Present, defend, and evolve the roadmap as business needs shift
• Transform stakeholder requests from interruptions into a coherent, prioritized plan

Data Quality & Reliability

• Implement automated monitoring across source data, pipelines, and reports
• Catch upstream schema and source changes before they break downstream systems
• Run incidents to resolution when quality issues occur
• Build and maintain data lineage from production sources through warehouse models to dashboards
• Establish data contracts with engineering teams so breaking changes are caught before deployment

Platform Governance

• Administer Lightdash workspace: structure, permissions, certification, and rollout
• Balance stakeholder self-serve autonomy with workspace organization and trust
• Manage query performance and warehouse cost optimization
• Extend and protect the semantic layer—ensuring one governed definition per metric
• Review new Segment events against standards and keep the catalog matched to production reality
• Evolve event tracking guardrails including naming conventions, property dictionaries, and drift detection

AI & Security

• Govern what data AI agents can access through internal AI tooling
• Keep the warehouse AI-legible: documented, consistent, and safe for automated querying
• Manage access controls, PII handling, and retention under US state privacy laws
• Conduct periodic reviews of data access for users and AI tools

Hands-On Building

• Write SQL, debug Airflow DAGs, and configure permissions yourself
• Build automation for recurring quality checks rather than manual processes
• Create documentation and systems that operate without constant heroics

What We're Looking For

Core Expertise

• Governance as your craft: you genuinely enjoy making data systems trustworthy and can't leave broken naming conventions unfixed
• Hands-on management experience: you've been accountable for others' output while continuing to build yourself
• Deep technical fluency with data warehouses (Redshift or similar), dbt, and orchestration tools like Airflow
• Credible experience maintaining BI platforms and event tracking at company scale

Working Style

• AI-native approach: daily use of tools like Claude Code, Copilot, or ChatGPT to build checks, write automation, and document work
• Product-minded thinking: you start from business decisions, not pipeline mechanics, and turn vague asks into prioritized plans
• Automation-first instinct: your default for recurring checks is to build a monitor, not a checklist
• Enforcement with grace: you hold people to standards through clear rules and good tooling, saying no when necessary while maintaining relationships

Pay

Base salary for this fully remote position ranges from $75,000 to $120,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
