Build the skills for this role
Prioritize crisis and issues communications, media relations, narrative strategy for advocacy, stakeholder messaging, and clear writing under deadline. Familiarity with criminal justice policy language and ethical storytelling about incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people is highly relevant.
Prepare a portfolio of campaign or crisis responses, examples of earned media you led, and how you measure comms impact without hype. Expect scenario questions on sensitive justice stories, coalition messaging, and balancing speed with accuracy.
Strong fit if you have senior nonprofit or advocacy PR experience, comfort with high-stakes justice topics, and a track record turning complex policy into public narrative. Less ideal if you prefer pure corporate brand PR without mission-driven advocacy.
