City of Olympia is hiring a Lateral Police Officer to join its law enforcement team and serve the Olympia community. This full-time position offers qualified lateral officers the opportunity to bring experience from another agency while continuing your career in public safety.
The Opportunity
As a Lateral Police Officer, you'll work under general supervision performing essential police duties that keep Olympia safe. This role is designed for experienced officers transitioning from other law enforcement agencies. We're committed to recognizing your prior experience and investment in your success—qualified lateral hires receive a phased signing bonus of up to $25,000 ($10,000 upon hire, $5,000 following successful field training completion, and $10,000 upon successful completion of your 18-month probationary period).
What You'll Do
- Enforce local, state, and federal laws with professionalism and integrity
- Respond to emergency calls and non-emergency service requests throughout the community
- Protect public safety by preventing and responding to criminal activity
- Apprehend suspects and prepare cases for prosecution
- Conduct investigations, maintain detailed reports, and testify in legal proceedings
- Build positive community relationships and engage in community policing initiatives
- Complete required field training and probationary period as part of your onboarding
What You Bring
- Current or recent experience as a certified police officer with another law enforcement agency
- Valid POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certification or eligibility for reciprocal certification
- Demonstrated knowledge of criminal law, arrest procedures, and law enforcement practices
- Strong communication and decision-making abilities under pressure
- Commitment to public service and community policing values
- Ability to pass background check, medical examination, and psychological evaluation
