Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP-PEER COUNSELOR)

About the Role

This is a full-time, temporary seasonal position that combines meaningful employment with the opportunity to develop leadership skills. As a Peer Counselor with the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District, you'll work within our Client Services division to deliver support and mentorship to youth participants throughout the summer program.

What You'll Do

• Mentor youth participants and provide peer counseling support tailored to individual needs
• Lead or co-facilitate group activities, team-building exercises, and interactive workshops
• Model positive behaviors and serve as a reliable, approachable role model
• Build meaningful connections with program participants and help them achieve their goals
• Collaborate with program staff on daily activities, scheduling, and event logistics
• Provide constructive feedback, encouragement, and guidance to peers
• Foster an inclusive, supportive environment where all youth feel valued and heard

What We're Looking For

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent credential
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
• Demonstrated commitment to working with and supporting young people
• Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
• Consistent attendance and professional reliability
• Positive, solution-oriented attitude toward community engagement
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect participant privacy

Compensation

This position provides hourly compensation in accordance with Summer Youth Employment Program guidelines.
