Nerd Up is hiring a Senior DSP Scientist – Sonar & Acoustic Systems (Cleared, Onsite) in Simpsonville, Howard County, for engineers who want to push the boundaries of how we detect and interpret sound beneath the waves.
About the Role
This is a cleared research and development position based at our Columbia, MD laboratory, working 100% onsite alongside a hands-on R&D team. As the Associate to the Director of R&D, you will help steer technical direction across sensing, modeling, and prototyping while remaining personally immersed in the engineering itself. In short, you will help us uncover the acoustic signatures the ocean tends to keep concealed.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive technical initiatives spanning acoustic sensing, signal modeling, and rapid prototyping.
- Support the Director of R&D in setting direction while contributing as a working scientist on active projects.
- Develop and refine digital signal processing approaches for sonar and underwater acoustic systems.
- Help shape research strategy and translate concepts into testable prototypes.
Qualifications
- An active Secret clearance (or higher) is required for this role.
- U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
- Deep expertise in digital signal processing (DSP), particularly applied to acoustic or sonar systems.
- Comfort balancing leadership of technical efforts with direct, hands-on research and prototyping.
- Willingness to work fully onsite at the Columbia, MD facility.
