About the Role
As a Special Education Assistant on the Life Skills team at Agnew Middle School, you will work directly alongside a special education teacher to deliver individualized instruction and daily support to students with diverse learning needs. This paraprofessional position is classified under the Instructional Support Compensation Plan (Pay Grade 3) and reports to the campus Principal.
What You'll Do
- Assist the special education teacher in implementing individualized education programs (IEPs) and life skills curriculum
- Support students with personal care, adaptive routines, and functional daily living activities
- Provide one-on-one and small-group instructional support under teacher direction
- Monitor student behavior and apply positive behavioral intervention strategies consistently
- Help maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive classroom setting
- Document student progress and communicate observations to the supervising teacher
- Assist with transitions, community-based activities, and campus routines as needed
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework preferred
- Experience working with students with disabilities, particularly in life skills or functional academic settings
- Patience, reliability, and a genuine commitment to student growth and independence
- Ability to follow instructional plans and work collaboratively as part of a special education team
- Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries
- Willingness to assist with personal care tasks and physical support as required by student needs
