Staff Kubernetes Engineer

LastPass is hiring a remote Staff Kubernetes Engineer based in Portugal to architect and operate the cloud-native platform that powers secure access for more than 100,000 businesses and millions of users worldwide.

About the Role

As a Staff Kubernetes Engineer at LastPass, you will lead the design, construction, and ongoing care of cloud-native infrastructure built on Infrastructure as Code and GitOps workflows. Sitting at the heart of our Platform Engineering group, you will run the company's entire Kubernetes footprint on AWS EKS, keep containerized workloads scalable and highly available, and equip engineering teams with the tooling they need to ship quickly and safely. This is a fully remote position open to candidates in Portugal.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the architecture, evolution, and operational excellence of our Kubernetes platform on AWS, balancing scale, resilience, and reliability.
• Build and refine Kubernetes infrastructure with Infrastructure as Code (CDK), setting and enforcing architectural standards.
• Serve as the go-to domain expert, partnering with the Architecture team to translate strategy into clear reference patterns for engineers.
• Guide technical decisions across teams through mentorship, design reviews, and hands-on support.
• Spot scaling limits, reliability gaps, and inefficiencies early, and resolve them proactively.
• Engineer secure, compliant, and observable clusters with integrated monitoring, logging, and alerting.
• Lead the migration of legacy, non-cloud-native applications onto modern infrastructure.
• Advance automation and GitOps to cut manual toil, prevent drift, and accelerate releases.
• Participate in on-call rotations, incident response, and root cause analysis.

Qualifications

• Deep expertise in Kubernetes cluster design and operations, including multi-node clusters tuned for performance, scalability, and fault tolerance.
• Hands-on experience with service mesh tooling, auto-scaling, resource optimization, rolling upgrades, and zero-downtime disaster recovery.
• Solid working knowledge of AWS and EKS.
• Ability to assess application readiness and craft low-disruption migration strategies.
• A strong automation instinct and experience with observability platforms such as DataDog.
• Excellent troubleshooting skills, a collaborative mindset, and strong written and verbal English.
• Comfort using AI tools and large language models to boost platform and operational efficiency.
• Nice to have: multiple IaC languages (CDK with TypeScript, CloudFormation), ArgoCD and GitOps, and Azure alongside AWS.
