About this role & career path
Deputy lead assurance roles in nuclear safety SMS sit between specialist technical assurance and people/process leadership. Progression often runs specialist → lead/deputy lead → program or nuclear safety management roles within large infrastructure consultancies like AECOM.
Build the skills for this role
Prioritize nuclear safety management systems, assurance and audit methods, regulatory literacy, risk-informed decision making, and clear technical writing. No certification resources or costs are provided in the data.
Be ready to walk through SMS assurance examples: how you scoped an audit, evidence you used, non-conformances, and how findings were closed. Discuss nuclear or high-hazard safety culture, stakeholder conflict on risk acceptance, and how you would operate as deputy lead under AECOM’s project delivery model. Expect scenario questions on incomplete evidence and escalating safety concerns.
Strong fit if you have nuclear or high-hazard SMS assurance experience and can relocate to Australia for an AECOM infrastructure role. Weak fit without safety-management system depth or willingness to move internationally.
