Medical Director, Sickle Cell Disease, Clinical Development

Agios Pharmaceuticals is seeking a Medical Director to lead clinical development efforts in sickle cell disease. This full-time position is based in San Diego, San Diego County, and offers the opportunity to drive meaningful innovation in a rare disease program where your medical expertise directly impacts patient outcomes.

About the Role

As Medical Director of Clinical Development for our sickle cell disease program, you'll serve as the medical and scientific leader for clinical studies, regulatory strategy, and cross-functional program execution. You'll direct the medical science agenda, ensure clinical trial design reflects patient needs and regulatory requirements, and champion the advancement of our investigational therapies from development through submission and launch.

What You'll Do

• Oversee the medical and clinical strategy for sickle cell disease development programs
• Design and review clinical trial protocols, ensuring scientific rigor and patient safety
• Lead medical monitoring, data review, and safety assessments across active studies
• Serve as the medical authority in regulatory interactions and submissions
• Collaborate with clinical research, biostatistics, pharmacology, and commercial teams to align program objectives
• Evaluate emerging clinical data and translate findings into program decisions
• Represent the program in cross-functional meetings and external scientific forums

What We're Looking For

• MD or DO with board certification in internal medicine, hematology, or related specialty
• 5+ years of clinical development or medical affairs experience in pharmaceutical or biotech environments
• Demonstrated expertise in clinical trial design, regulatory pathways, and medical safety oversight
• Strong knowledge of sickle cell disease pathophysiology, clinical management, and treatment landscapes
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and communicate complex medical concepts effectively
• Commitment to advancing rare disease treatments and engaging with patient communities
