About the Role
As a high school special education educator, you'll serve as an advocate and instructor for students navigating secondary education with varying learning needs. You'll design meaningful, standards-aligned lessons tailored to individual student abilities, build inclusive classroom practices, and mentor students toward post-secondary success. This role combines direct instruction, behavioral support, and collaboration across your school's faculty to create pathways for every student.
What You'll Do
- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) that reflect each student's strengths, learning style, and long-term goals
- Deliver specialized instruction in core academic subjects, adapted to meet diverse learning profiles
- Collaborate with general education teachers to co-teach, modify curriculum, and integrate students into mainstream classes when appropriate
- Monitor student progress through formative assessments, maintain detailed documentation, and communicate outcomes to parents and guardians
- Support positive student behavior through evidence-based interventions and classroom management strategies
- Participate in IEP meetings, staffing sessions, and professional development to stay current with special education best practices
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree and valid Texas special education teaching certification (or equivalent state credential)
- Demonstrated experience teaching high school students, particularly those with disabilities
- Knowledge of special education law, including IDEA and Section 504 accommodations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with colleagues and engaging families
- Ability to adapt instruction creatively, remain patient in challenging moments, and celebrate incremental wins
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful learning environment where all students feel valued
