About This Opportunity

We are representing a leading AI research organization for their prestigious Fellows Program, focused on ML Systems & Reinforcement Learning. This is a unique 4-month, full-time research fellowship designed to foster emerging technical talent in AI safety and research—regardless of your previous experience level.

Our client runs multiple cohorts throughout the year, with the next cohort expected to start in January 2027. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and alternative start dates may be accommodated in some circumstances.

Fellows will work on empirical projects using external infrastructure (open-source models, public APIs) aligned with advanced research priorities, with the goal of producing public outputs such as paper submissions. In previous cohorts, over 80% of fellows successfully produced research papers.

What You'll Experience

• 4 months of dedicated, full-time research work

Research Focus Areas

ML Systems & Performance Track:

• Building CPU simulators for accelerator workloads
• Adding backends for different accelerators on open source projects
• Developing on-demand infrastructure for research projects
• Creating complex synthetic data or environment pipelines

Reinforcement Learning Track:

• Building model-based tools to understand and improve training data quality
• Research projects exploring generalization in ML systems
• Creating RL environments for capability and safety-related tasks
• Conducting research and implementing solutions in RL algorithms

What We're Looking For

Required qualifications:

• Fluency in Python programming
• Availability to work full-time for 4 months (40 hours/week)
• Work authorization in the US, UK, or Canada (visa sponsorship not available)
• Must be physically located in one of these countries during the program

Ideal candidates have:

• Strong software engineering skills with experience building complex ML systems
• Strong technical background in computer science, mathematics, or physics
• Experience with training, fine-tuning, or evaluating large language models
• Comfort working with large-scale distributed systems and high-performance computing
• Ability to balance research exploration with engineering rigor
• Skills in analyzing and debugging model training processes
• Motivation around AI safety and beneficial AI development
• Interest in transitioning into empirical AI research
• Strong collaboration and communication skills
• Ability to implement ideas quickly in fast-paced environments

Pay

Weekly stipend of $3,850 USD / £2,310 GBP / $4,300 CAD (based on location), with an expectation of 40 hours per week for 4 months. Additional benefits vary by country. Substantial compute funding (~$15,000/month) and research expenses are provided separately.
