Designer III – Land Development

McAdams, a comprehensive design and engineering firm based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is seeking a full-time Designer III specializing in land development to join our collaborative team of professionals.

The Opportunity

As a Designer III in our land development practice, you'll serve as a senior designer on client projects, taking ownership of design direction from initial concept through final construction documents. You'll lead cross-functional teams, oversee technical deliverables, and manage complex workflows while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy. Your Responsibilities

• Oversee the preparation of preliminary design documentation—including site layout plans, utility infrastructure networks, and grading strategies—to establish project foundation and support client feasibility analysis
• Enforce company CAD protocols and design specifications for consistency across all technical deliverables
• Prepare and organize construction drawing sets, incorporate revisions from both internal team members and external reviewers, and maintain accurate project records
• Create detailed technical sheets with specifications, sequencing notes, and construction requirements for complete project documentation
• Advance conceptual designs into detailed site plans, leveraging site analysis and compliance requirements
• Develop water distribution and sanitary infrastructure layouts from schematic through construction document phases
• Prepare grading plans, generate terrain models, and analyze earthwork volumes to optimize project economics
• Apply Civil 3D expertise to model alignments, profiles, terrain surfaces, and drainage networks
• Contribute to stormwater management and erosion control strategies aligned with environmental standards
• Facilitate communication between design teams, engineers, and project management to ensure coordinated delivery
• Interface with municipal and regulatory agencies to address review comments and advance approvals efficiently
• Maintain project timelines by accurately forecasting design task duration and resource allocation
• Champion collaboration, share technical insights, and contribute to a positive team culture
• Mentor and develop junior team members as they grow into their roles

Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a closely related discipline
• Minimum 2 to 5 years of professional experience in civil engineering, site development, or a comparable field
• Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D is strongly preferred
• Professional designations (EI or PE) are preferred
• Excellent attention to technical detail and precision in document production
• Clear, direct communication and ability to work effectively across team and discipline boundaries
• Problem-solving mindset with capacity to develop innovative solutions to design challenges
• Strong time management and ability to balance multiple work streams in demanding schedules
