Software Engineer (all levels) – Core Technology

Responsibilities

Our talent team is representing a confidential public-sector research organization focused on advanced AI security and evaluation. We're seeking Software Engineers at all experience levels—from junior through to senior and staff—to join small, agile teams building research-oriented software and infrastructure.

In this role, you'll work on cutting-edge technology with real-world impact. You might:

• Develop features for open-source evaluation frameworks, including sandbox plugins that support advanced agentic evaluations with safe mechanisms for arbitrary code execution
• Implement support for new classes of open-weights models on model hosting platforms
• Design custom infrastructure to support novel research projects
• Collaborate with the open-source community on evaluation tools and plugin ecosystems
• Debug and resolve issues during frontier AI model testing exercises, adapting to API changes from leading AI laboratories
• Build and maintain systems for running large-scale evaluations and hosting frontier models for research and human studies

You'll receive mentorship from your manager and technical leads, and regularly interact with world-class researchers and staff from top-tier backgrounds.

What We're Looking For

Core requirements:

• Proven ability to write production-quality code at pace
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience with teamwork and interpersonal collaboration
• Demonstrated capability tackling challenging technical problems

Highly valued skills (some subset preferred):

• Deep Python expertise, including language intricacies, Pythonic best practices, and familiarity with the wider ecosystem and tooling
• Experience designing, shipping, and maintaining complex technical products
• Track record of improving technical standards through mentoring and feedback
• Experience working with world-class research teams comprising both scientists and engineers
• Cloud infrastructure experience using AWS, Azure, or similar platforms with infrastructure-as-code tools

Additional valuable experience:

• Cloud infrastructure and DevOps (Kubernetes, Terraform, CDK, Docker)
• Cybersecurity expertise
• ML Operations (vLLM, agent frameworks, fine-tuning, RAG systems)

This position is based in London with hybrid working arrangements. Successful candidates will require security clearance including baseline personnel security standard (BPSS), with strong preference for counter-terrorist check (CTC) eligibility.

Pay

Pay via Get A Job.ai is benchmarked to role scope and relevant experience. Most offers land between £65,000 and £145,000 annually, structured with additional pension contributions. Specific salary bands by level:

• Level 3: £65,000–£75,000
• Level 4: £85,000–£95,000
• Level 5: £105,000–£115,000
• Level 6: £125,000–£135,000
• Level 7: £145,000

The employer also contributes 28.97% of base salary to pension.
