About This Position

You'll serve as Vice President of Software Engineering for our Core Systems team, leading the engineering organization responsible for the infrastructure, services, and platforms that power Cengage's learning ecosystem. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll combine strategic vision with deep technical expertise, setting the engineering culture, standards, and technical roadmap for critical systems that support millions of daily transactions and interactions. You'll report directly to senior leadership and partner across Product, Operations, and Business divisions to align engineering excellence with company objectives.

Core Duties

• Lead and develop a high-performing software engineering organization, fostering technical excellence, innovation, and accountability
• Define and execute the technical strategy for core systems, including architecture, scalability, reliability, and security
• Drive modernization initiatives, technology platform decisions, and infrastructure improvements to support current and future business needs
• Establish engineering standards, best practices, and processes that enable rapid, safe delivery of features and fixes
• Partner with cross-functional leaders to translate business requirements into technical roadmaps and deliver outcomes on schedule
• Build and maintain a strong engineering culture centered on learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement

What You Bring

• 15+ years of progressive software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in a VP or equivalent executive leadership role
• Proven expertise in architecting, building, and scaling distributed systems and platform infrastructure
• Strong track record of building, mentoring, and developing high-performing engineering teams
• Experience leading technical strategy, technology modernization, and complex engineering initiatives in large organizations
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, with ability to translate between technical and business contexts
• Deep understanding of software development best practices, cloud technologies, and operational excellence
