High School English Teacher – Long Term Substitute (Sept. – Dec.)

Barre Unified Union School District seeks a dedicated full-time long-term substitute English teacher for Spaulding High School in Barre, Washington County to lead engaging instruction for high school students from September through December 2026.

Position Summary

This full-time long-term substitute position offers an exceptional opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a secondary English classroom at Spaulding High School. You'll deliver thoughtful, creative instruction that engages high school learners in grades 9–12 across a range of core English competencies. The four-month assignment, running from September 2026 through December 2026, provides valuable continuity and stability in the classroom while allowing you to develop your skills in secondary education.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver rigorous, engaging English lessons aligned with Vermont standards for grades 9–12 students
• Create and maintain a supportive, inclusive classroom culture that encourages student participation, critical thinking, and creative expression
• Assess student learning through formative and summative assessments, and provide substantive feedback to help students improve
• Communicate regularly with department colleagues, building administration, and families about student progress and classroom dynamics
• Manage classroom operations, attendance records, and daily routines with professionalism and fairness
• Participate actively in professional collaboration and support the school's academic mission

What We're Looking For

• Valid Vermont teaching license or eligibility for state licensure in English/Language Arts
• Strong knowledge of secondary English curriculum, including literature, composition, communication skills, and writing strategies
• Demonstrated success creating inclusive, positive, and academically rigorous learning environments
• Experience teaching high school students in a secondary educational setting
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal abilities
• Flexibility, strong organizational skills, dependability, and a collaborative, student-centered mindset
