Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies' Workers Compensation Division seeks an experienced workers' compensation defense attorney to join our in-house legal team as Associate House Counsel in Sacramento. In this full-time position, you will defend workers' compensation claims, provide strategic counsel, and manage litigation for one of the nation's largest insurance operations.
About the Role
This in-house counsel position combines active litigation, claims evaluation, and legal advisory work within our Workers Compensation Division. You will work directly with claims professionals, management, and outside counsel to protect the company's interests while navigating California's complex workers' compensation landscape.
What You'll Do
- Defend workers' compensation claims from inception through resolution, deposition, and trial
- Evaluate claim liability, damages exposure, and settlement value
- Negotiate with opposing counsel, claimants, and third parties to achieve favorable outcomes
- Conduct legal research on California workers' compensation statutes, regulations, and case precedent
- Advise internal teams on workers' comp coverage, compliance, and claim strategy
- Manage litigation workflows, discovery, and court compliance
- Participate in mediation and alternative dispute resolution
What We're Looking For
- Licensed attorney with solid grounding in California workers' compensation law
- Demonstrable experience defending workers' compensation cases
- Recent trial experience with strong deposition and courtroom skills
- Excellent written and oral communication abilities
- Proven negotiation and settlement skills
- Organized, detail-oriented approach to managing multiple matters
- Ability to work effectively with claims, legal, and business partners
