Environmental Health Specialist (Wastewater)

About the Role

The Johnston County Public Health Department seeks an Environmental Health Specialist to support the county's Onsite Wastewater and Well Programs. You'll work directly to safeguard water quality and public health through rigorous oversight of private onsite wastewater treatment systems and well water supplies. This role combines field inspections, regulatory enforcement, and community engagement to ensure Johnston County residents have safe, functioning water systems.

What You'll Do

• Conduct inspections and evaluations of septic systems, drain fields, and related onsite wastewater infrastructure
• Review and process permit applications for well construction, repairs, and wastewater system installations
• Investigate public health complaints related to water quality and wastewater system failures
• Enforce state and local environmental health regulations and standards
• Assess system failures and recommend corrective actions to property owners
• Maintain detailed inspection records and compliance documentation
• Educate the public about proper maintenance of private water and wastewater systems

What We're Looking For

• Current RS (Registered Sanitarian) credential required
• Valid on-site authorization or ability to obtain
• Strong knowledge of wastewater treatment principles and private well systems
• Detail-oriented approach to regulatory compliance and record-keeping
• Excellent communication skills for public interactions and field inspections
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for county-wide travel
• We welcome qualified interns who have completed centralized training in onsite wastewater systems
