Charleston County School District is hiring a full-time Teacher Assistant for Special Education (Low Incidence) at North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary School in North Charleston, Charleston County, for the 2026-27 school year.

About the Role

As a Special Education Teacher Assistant supporting a Low Incidence classroom, you will work alongside certified educators to deliver individualized instruction and daily support to students with significant learning, developmental, or physical needs. This is a classified, full-time position (1.0 FTE) on a standard 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. schedule, based in North Charleston, South Carolina. The role is on-site and is not remote.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist the lead special education teacher in carrying out lesson plans and Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
• Provide one-on-one and small-group support to students with low-incidence disabilities.
• Help students with academic tasks, communication, mobility, feeding, and personal-care routines as needed.
• Reinforce positive behavior and maintain a safe, structured, and encouraging classroom environment.
• Support students during transitions, related services, and school activities throughout the day.
• Collaborate with staff and document student progress to inform instruction.

Qualifications

• A passing ParaPro or ParaPathways assessment score, or completion of 60 semester hours of accredited college credit.
• Patience, reliability, and a genuine commitment to supporting students with special needs.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively within a classroom team.
• Physical ability to assist students with mobility and daily living needs.

Compensation

This classified hourly position pays a starting range of $19.04 to $34.54 per hour with a passing ParaPro/ParaPathways score, or $19.71 to $38.30 per hour with 60 hours of accredited college credit. The posting remains open until filled.
