Join Vay as a Senior Backend Engineer in Las Vegas, Nevada, for a full-time opportunity centered on backend systems that advance remote vehicle operations. This role places you in a hands-on environment building the infrastructure behind seamless on-demand mobility.

Position Summary

As Senior Backend Engineer at Vay you will own major components of the systems powering fleet coordination, dispatching, payments, and live interfaces between operators and riders. You will solve previously unaddressed technical problems that sit where advanced software meets street-level transportation, partnering daily with product, frontend, mobile, electrical, and embedded colleagues. Full life-cycle ownership is expected, from clarifying needs and crafting architectures through implementation, release, and ongoing improvement, so that every deployment delivers smoother, safer, and more efficient customer journeys.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, implement, and continuously improve scalable Golang backend services, APIs, and cloud resources expressed as code, reinforced by mature CI/CD practices that enable confident and frequent releases.
  • Participate in cross-team platform initiatives that establish shared libraries, tooling, and engineering standards to raise overall productivity and technical quality.
  • Collaborate tightly with frontend, mobile, and embedded software groups to deliver complete solutions that directly strengthen both rider experience and day-to-day operations.
  • Partner with product and engineering leadership to refine objectives, surface requirements, and contribute actively to sprint-level and quarterly planning.
  • Champion maintainable code, comprehensive automation, and continuous observability so systems remain reliable under growth and developers enjoy an excellent working environment.

What We're Looking For

  • Demonstrated success designing and operating scalable backend services and APIs, ideally using Golang; solid experience in Java or Python is also highly valued.
  • Sound grasp of cloud-native patterns, distributed-system design principles, and practices that ensure capacity and resilience.
  • Working knowledge of event-driven messaging technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or equivalent systems.
  • Practical experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and production monitoring that keep deployments robust and easy to maintain.
  • Strong relational database skills, especially PostgreSQL, including data modeling and performance optimization.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, engineering, or a related STEM field, together with firm foundations in algorithms and data structures.
  • Additional strengths that are welcome include prior work in mobility or logistics, contributions to mobile-centric products, familiarity with Node.js, gRPC, AWS, Terraform or NoSQL stores, and proficiency in C/C++ for latency-sensitive modules.

About Vay

Vay applies remote driving technology that lets riders request a vehicle that arrives and travels public streets with no human on board. Currently operating in Las Vegas and preparing wider expansion across the United States and Europe, the company has attracted strategic investment of up to $410 million from Grab and has partnered with Kodiak to bring the same capabilities into commercial trucking. Tens of thousands of trips have already been completed while the local fleet continues to grow rapidly to meet demand; the organization was among the earliest to place fully remote vehicles on public roads in both Europe and the United States and ranks among the largest commercial driverless fleets in the Western world. Its international team drawn from more than thirty countries offers ESOP equity participation, flexible paid vacation, 30 percent savings on Vay rides, exclusive partner discounts, a $350 home-office allowance, and financial assistance for relocating to Las Vegas.
