The Opportunity

The Department of Conservation is seeking a Principal Ranger to join our Regional Operations Group in Southland. This role is crucial in protecting and managing Aotearoa New Zealand's natural and historic heritage for the benefit of present and future generations.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee and manage frontline conservation work, ensuring the protection and enhancement of places, species, and ecosystems.
• Develop and implement strategies to protect biodiversity and manage risks to conservation areas.
• Provide leadership and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of excellence in conservation practices.
• Collaborate with local communities, iwi, and stakeholders to ensure the effective management of natural and historic sites.

What We're Looking For

• A proven track record in conservation work, preferably within a similar role or senior leadership position.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate teams effectively.
• Strong knowledge of New Zealand's natural and historic heritage, including relevant legislation and policies.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders.
• A commitment to Māori values and principles, particularly Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
