About this role & career path

A Senior Communications Lead path usually builds from agency or sector comms roles into lead ownership of narrative, risk, and multi-channel delivery across government stakeholders. Progression may move toward principal adviser, director of communications, or broader public-affairs leadership within the wider public service.

Build the skills for this role

Prioritise clear writing under pressure, issues and crisis messaging, stakeholder and ministerial liaison, and public-sector process literacy (clearance, official information, brand consistency). No certification package is specified for this listing.

Prepare examples of complex messaging under scrutiny, cross-agency coordination, and trade-offs between speed, accuracy, and risk. Be ready to discuss how you would handle sensitive policy announcements, media queries, and multi-audience plans in a Wellington government context.

Strong fit if you lead communications in complex organisations, write crisply for public audiences, and work well with policy and political environments. Less suited if you prefer pure brand marketing without public accountability or multi-stakeholder clearance.
