Senior Software Engineer, Underwriting

About This Position

Coalition, Inc. is transforming how organizations approach digital risk management. As a Senior Software Engineer focused on Underwriting, you'll own the design and implementation of core backend systems that drive underwriting automation and decisioning. Your work will translate security data, insurance expertise, and machine learning into systems that assess and monitor cyber risk at scale. You'll partner directly with underwriting professionals, data scientists, and fellow engineers to evolve Coalition's underwriting platform and ensure it serves both automation and human decision-making needs effectively.

Core Duties

• Architect and develop production-grade backend services in Python and/or Go that execute underwriting logic and automate decisioning workflows
• Build integration layers that connect statistical models and machine learning algorithms for cyber risk assessment, pricing, and ongoing monitoring
• Establish operational visibility through alerts, monitoring dashboards, and structured incident response procedures
• Produce well-tested, maintainable code with comprehensive unit and integration test coverage to support rapid, confident deployments
• Drive medium-to-large engineering initiatives from conception to completion; mentor and collaborate with team members across engineering, product, and underwriting
• Participate in technical strategy discussions that evaluate scalability, architectural clarity, and practical tradeoffs as the platform grows
• Identify and implement opportunities to streamline underwriting workflows and reduce manual effort for risk teams

Requirements

• Proven experience designing, building, and operating backend APIs and services using Python and/or Go with knowledge of standard frameworks and architectural patterns
• Hands-on expertise with REST APIs and at least one alternative technology such as gRPC or GraphQL
• Proficiency with version control systems (Git or equivalent)
• Practical experience deploying, scaling, and troubleshooting applications in AWS or comparable cloud platforms
• Familiarity with observability, logging, and error-tracking systems (Sentry, Datadog, Jaeger, Zipkin, Graylog, AppDynamics, or similar)
• Experience contributing to agile teams using collaborative tools such as Atlassian products, GitHub, or GitLab
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience demonstrating technical depth
• Demonstrated ability to independently own projects of moderate scope, make sound technical decisions, and develop junior engineers
