iHerb is hiring a fully remote Principal Engineer to shape the technical future of the iOS and Android experiences relied on by millions of customers worldwide. Based anywhere in the United States, you will be the most senior individual contributor steering mobile architecture, modernization, and engineering excellence.
About the Role
This Principal Engineer position blends deep hands-on engineering with company-wide technical influence. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you will own iHerb's mobile platform strategy end to end, partner with fellow Principals, Engineering Managers, and VPs, and make the toughest architectural calls so that platform decisions compound in value instead of piling up as technical debt. You will also help set iHerb's AI-native engineering standards and lead the mobile modernization journey.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and own mobile platform architecture, including app structure, shared component strategy, and native versus cross-platform tradeoffs.
- Scope and drive the mobile modernization effort alongside the Mobile Engineering Manager and cross-functional partners.
- Stay hands-on by writing production code, building proofs of concept, and validating designs through working software.
- Establish and enforce coding and architecture standards, leading both code and architecture reviews.
- Assess cross-platform frameworks such as React Native or Kotlin Multiplatform and decide where they fit.
- Shape iHerb's AI-driven SDLC golden path—shared standards, Claude Code skills, guardrails, and automation.
- Resolve cross-cutting decisions across multiple teams, mentor senior engineers, and represent engineering with product, data science, security, and infrastructure partners.
- Capture architectural decisions in the shared knowledge base so institutional learning accumulates.
Qualifications
- 10+ years in software engineering, with meaningful time at senior, staff, or principal IC level.
- Proven, production use of AI-assisted tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor), with clear views on workflow shifts, quality tradeoffs, and guardrails.
- Production-grade expertise in both Swift (iOS) and Kotlin (Android), plus hands-on cross-platform experience (React Native or Kotlin Multiplatform).
- Demonstrated ownership of mobile architecture—state management, offline handling, performance, and release processes—and leadership of a modernization or re-architecture effort.
- Experience designing large-scale distributed systems and driving standards across multiple teams or organizations.
- Strong writing, communication, and consensus-building skills; experience with distributed teams across the US, China, and Latin America.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite; Google Workspace preferred. Bachelor's in Computer Science or related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
