Position Summary

The University of Otago seeks a dedicated and experienced Māori Community Liaison Officer to join the Kaitakawaeka Māori team. This role is pivotal in supporting the growth and well-being of Māori students through community engagement, cultural revitalization, and academic success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate strong relationships between the University of Otago and local Māori communities to enhance student support services.
  • Organize and coordinate events that celebrate Māori culture and heritage, fostering a sense of belonging among students.
  • Provide cultural guidance and mentorship to Māori students, ensuring their academic success and personal development.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve access and retention rates for Māori students within the University.

Requirements

  • A strong understanding of Māori culture and tikanga (customs).

  • Excellent organizational and project management abilities.
  • A commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi).
