What You'll Do
- Lead a team of inpatient coders by setting clear expectations, coaching for consistency, and monitoring productivity and quality benchmarks.
- Assign and validate ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for complex inpatient encounters to ensure accurate DRG outcomes and compliant documentation.
- Conduct routine quality audits of team coding, identify trends, and deliver focused feedback that improves overall accuracy.
- Issue clinical documentation queries when records lack the specificity required for complete code assignment.
- Mentor new and existing coders on official guidelines, payer requirements, and best-practice workflows.
- Produce regular coding metric summaries and recommend process improvements that strengthen the Department’s performance.
- Partner with clinical, revenue-cycle, and compliance colleagues to resolve coding questions and support external audits.
- Maintain personal coding proficiency on advanced inpatient cases and serve as the escalation point for difficult encounters.
Requirements
- Active coding credential such as CCS, RHIA, RHIT, or equivalent, with demonstrated mastery of inpatient coding principles.
- Several years of hands-on inpatient coding experience in an acute-care setting, plus prior leadership or lead-coder responsibility.
- Expert knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, Official Coding Guidelines, DRG structures, and current coding clinics.
- Proven ability to audit work, coach staff, and raise accuracy rates through constructive review.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for querying physicians, training team members, and reporting results.
- Comfort with electronic health-record platforms, encoder software, and spreadsheet tools for tracking productivity.
- Capacity to perform the role Full Time from BMC’s Boston, Massachusetts, Massachusetts location and meet established attendance and quality standards.
