Lead Wetland Field Ecologist – IN

Join Merjent as a Lead Wetland Field Ecologist based in Wauwatosa, Milwaukee County, and take charge of field ecology operations across Indiana and beyond. This full-time position offers the opportunity to lead professional teams conducting comprehensive wetland and ecological surveys that support major utility, transportation, and development infrastructure projects. You'll combine technical expertise in wetland science with strong leadership skills to manage crews, mentor emerging professionals, and deliver high-quality environmental assessments throughout the region and across the United States.

About the Role

As Lead Wetland Field Ecologist, you'll oversee ecological field operations and serve as the primary technical authority for wetland delineation, stream assessment, and related environmental surveys. Your leadership will guide multiple field teams through complex ecological investigations in support of infrastructure development, utility expansion, and environmental compliance projects. Working primarily from the Indianapolis area, you'll drive both the technical execution and the professional development of your team.

What You'll Do

• Lead and direct field teams in conducting wetland delineations, jurisdictional determinations, and ecological surveys
• Manage stream and riparian assessments, water quality investigations, and habitat evaluations
• Train and mentor junior ecologists and field staff in scientific methods, safety protocols, and professional standards
• Oversee data collection, field documentation, and quality assurance for ecological studies
• Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and regulatory agencies to meet project objectives
• Travel to project sites throughout Indiana, with potential assignments across the United States
• Apply current federal and state wetland regulations, environmental compliance requirements, and best practices

What We're Looking For

• Advanced experience in wetland delineation, field ecology, and environmental assessment
• Proven leadership capability managing field teams and mentoring professional staff
• Strong knowledge of wetland identification, vegetation ecology, soil science, and hydrologic assessment
• Familiarity with EPA wetland delineation methods and state and federal regulatory frameworks
• Excellent communication and project coordination skills
• Ability to work independently and under tight project timelines
• Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regionally and nationally
• Field work capability in diverse weather and terrain conditions
